Marinos Bernitsas | University of Michigan Research Intern Driving Concussion Research and Biomedical Innovation
Marinos Bernitsas is a Research Intern at the University of Michigan Concussion Center, biomedical researcher, and founder of The Neurodivergent Writer’s Hub. Through his work in concussion research, biomolecular science, sports medicine research, and nonprofit leadership, he is helping advance scientific discovery while promoting education, patient care, and community engagement.
Advancing Concussion Research at the University of Michigan
After graduating from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Biomolecular Science in 2024, Marinos Bernitsas continued contributing to research as a Research Intern at the University of Michigan Concussion Center. His work supports concussion studies that improve the understanding, diagnosis, and prevention of head injuries while promoting safer participation in athletics.
As part of the Concussion Center team, Marinos assists with baseline testing for student-athletes, concussion prevention education, patient-centered research initiatives, and community outreach programs designed to improve awareness surrounding brain health. His research experience reflects a commitment to translating scientific findings into meaningful improvements for athletes, patients, and healthcare providers.
Prior to joining the University of Michigan Concussion Center, Marinos conducted biomedical research at Wayne State University, where he participated in studies involving PDHK cancer pathways and opioid-related research. These experiences broadened his understanding of laboratory science, clinical research, and translational medicine.
Leadership Through The Neurodivergent Writer’s Hub
Outside of biomedical research, Marinos is the founder of The Neurodivergent Writer’s Hub, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for neurodivergent writers to share their voices through writing, education, and community collaboration.
The organization promotes creativity, accessibility, and inclusion while providing supportive spaces that encourage personal growth and meaningful storytelling. His nonprofit work demonstrates the same commitment to improving lives that guides his scientific research.
Community Service and Future Aspirations
A first-generation Greek-American from Northville, Michigan, Marinos actively volunteers through SafetyTown events hosted by the University of Michigan Concussion Center, helping educate children and families about injury prevention and public safety.
His professional background also includes experience as a medical assistant and phlebotomist, providing firsthand exposure to patient care that complements his research experience. By combining clinical experience, biomedical research, and nonprofit leadership, Marinos continues working toward his long-term goal of becoming an academic physician-scientist dedicated to improving healthcare through research, education, and innovation.
