Since beginning his marine biology research over 20 years ago, Alistair Economakis has earned an acclaimed reputation in the marine science community.
The focus of his research on coastal marine life, shark aggregations, and beyond has been documented in various articles and publications, authored and co-authored by Economakis. Along with fellow researcher and environmental expert, Ioannis E. Batjakas, Alistair Economakis has made various contributions to the study of marine wildlife in Greece. As a team, he and Batjakas established a national public aquarium in Athens and also published their in-depth research in the form of two scientific texts.
Coastal Fishes of Greece
(Co-authored by Ioannis E. Batjakas)
Published in 1995, this text dives deep into the concept of professional and recreational fishing. Backed by years of research, Coastal Fishes of Greece questions the impact of the process and explores the negative environmental effects that this has caused across centuries. The text highlights valuable insight on the marine ecosystems and organisms inhabiting Greek waters. Economakis and Batjakas published this work in hopes of providing tourists, fishermen and divers with a valuable resource to identify local species of fish.
The Greek Seashore: A Field Guide to Coastal Invertebrates
(Co-authored by Ioannis E. Batjakas)
Published in 2002, The Greek Seashore: A Field Guide to Coastal Invertebrates develops on the research presented in Coastal Fishes of Greece. True to its name, the Field Guide acts as a resource intended to be used while encountering marine wildlife along the Greek seashore. Over 85 species are represented in the book, complete with color photos and detailed drawings.
Continued Research
Alistair Economakis has traveled to Greece to further conduct research in these fields. The marine biologist hopes to highlight how modern environmental issues and developments have impacted populations of wildlife inhabiting the Greek seashore.
