Janel Schermerhorn is an MSc student pursuing studies in Data, Inequality & Society at the University of Edinburgh. An active volunteer and podcast producer, Schermerhorn is passionate about helping others and telling their stories.
Janel Schermerhorn is a professional focused on building stronger communities. Throughout her career, Schermerhorn’s focus on inclusivity has remained paramount. As someone who is passionate about storytelling, Schermerhorn recognizes the value and importance of embracing each individual’s uniqueness, as well as their ability to strengthen the group. Outside of her formal education and professional experiences, Schermerhorn is actively involved in volunteer work with various nonprofits. She has previously worked with Nourishing Networks, Food Box Program and Common Ground Berlin — just to name a few.
Education & Training
MSc Student at University of Edinburgh
Janel Schermerhorn is currently enrolled as an MSc student at the University of Edinburgh. Schermerhorn’s concentration is focused on Data, Inequality & Society. She is projected to complete her MSc in 2024. Through this cross-disciplinary experience, Schermerhorn is solidifying her command in data ethics, data analysis, equity and inclusion and people management. In addition to the pursuit of her MSc, Schermerhorn maintains her MBA and a BA in Psychology.
Certifications
Beyond the scope of her larger academic concentrations, Janel Schermerhorn pursues learning opportunities for professional development whenever she can. She maintains certifications in Project Management as well as a Mental Health First Aid certificate. At the core of her work, Schermerhorn is focused on people and the many lessons present in each daily interaction. With this mindset, she embraces new learning opportunities at each stage of her career. In many ways, Schermerhorn’s professional experiences and many leadership roles have provided her with invaluable lessons.
German Language & Culture
Janel Schermerhorn maintains A1 proficiency in German. She is passionate about German language and actively participates in volunteering and storytelling engagements that tie her deeper to German culture. From 2017 to 2019, Schermerhorn stood as President of American Women’s Club of Berlin. She has previously volunteered with Common Ground Berlin and supported the AWC Berlin Charity Auction.
